So I just spent an amazing weekend in Napa. My parents, my sister and her boyfriend, my girlfriend and her parents all came out to visit me and we headed up to Napa for a long weekend. It was a great weekend – the wine, the food, the views. Everything was awesome except that I pulled my back….twice. The first time was at the gym right before Napa and it just got worse on the drive there. The second time was washing my friggin’ hands over the sink. I blame that one on the “ergonomics” of this country and everything being built for people under 5’10”. Sinks, counters, cabinets, door handles…everything is just a bit too low for a 6’3″ kinda guy and frankly I’m a little sick of it. When I have a house of my own it’s going to have insanely high cabinets so that it makes me feel like a little kid.

My back has been healing since I first pulled it on Dec. 29th, 2007 and it’s never fully healed. It technically isn’t a pull but a slipped disk which I think is a lot worse. I remember the day because it was 2 days before New Years and luckily I was visiting home and had nothing to do so I could just relax. I now fully understand the meaning of frustration. It’s so hard for me NOT to go to the gym. When I don’t go, I lose 5-10 lbs of weight and I can’t stand it. I’ll take off for a little bit and I’ll take it real easy when I go back but I can’t just stop altogether! I do remember sorta overdoing it at the gym this last time and could see where I may have pulled it, so I’ll certainly avoid what I was doing last time.

Anyways, I’m busy for the next few days, but I have a few recipes on hand that I’ve been meaning to post and want to propose a question of which recipe you guys would like to see next: homemade refried beans, vegetarian tacos, double-decker loaded peanut butter sandwich, BBQ chicken & ricotta pizza, or a peanut butter pumpkin mousse? All of them are healthy, as usual, but what appeals the most to you guys?

Definitely the double-decker loaded PB sandwich– yum yum
Sorry to hear about your back. That’s gotta suck. If it helps, I’m suffering from cramps (just thought I’d throw that out there :)

I’m thinking the mousse sounds intriguing. Hope the back heals up quickly! It’s the worst whenever something in that area is strained. You literally can’t move without pain.

  3. Celine says:

ouch! careful, big guy. heal up soon.

  4. Dee says:

    Sorry about the back :(
But let me get this straight, you LOSE weight when you don’t go to the gym? Hrumph.
Peanut butter pumpkin mousse, pretty please!

sending you healing across the ether (although I hear rest works quite well too). I had no idea you were such a giant! I’m only 5′ 7″ and I find that all counters and sinks are too low for me, so you must feel like Gulliver.

I used to go out with a really tall guy who did the washing up with his legs spread almost into the splits to get to the right level for the sink. I hope you have a dishwasher at home – your back is too precious to mess with.

Anyway – I’d like to see the mousse please. I’m all about the pumpkin at the moment.

Oh yeah.. I wish I lost weight when I sat on my arse….

Hi! I just discovered your site and i LOVE IT. I would also like to see the mousse. I just ordered the apple berry granola you use in your parfait. I see on the site there are a lot of low carb all-natural products from that brand. Is that all trustworthy? I know this might sound stupid, but why do these brands only sell online and they aren’t found in stores?

The mousse and double decker sound most intriguing to me. Sorry to hear about your back. Do what you can for now, and as you get better just try and take it slow.

“But let me get this straight, you LOSE weight when you don’t go to the gym? Hrumph.”
I find this to be true of most people that strength train at the gym rather than just doing excessive cardio. I can totally identify with that now.

Ouch. I heard slipped discs are excruciatingly painful. I hope you feel better soon.

Napa! I’m jealous. My husband has to go to Cali for business in a few months and I’m trying to talk him into an extended trip to include a drive through wine country. We’ll see.

I vote BBQ chicken & ricotta pizza.

    Have a good week!

Sorry to hear about your back! I’m 5 feet tall and swear one of these days I’m having my kitchen counters and cabinets lowered like the people on Little People, Big World. lol…

I’d love to see that mousse or refried beans.

So jealous of your trip to Napa! It’s on my list of life trips.

Sorry to hear about your back. Hope you feel better!

Sorry about your back :( Hope you feel better soon!

ALL of those dishes sound good, but my vote is definitely for the mousse.

Oh no!! Believe me, I know how hard it is to have to skip the gym – since I’m trying to build some upper-body strength (I have “stick arms,” haha), I always want to keep at it; but if I can’t because I’m sore or injured or something, I have to push through the frustration and just know that I’m doing what’s right for my body. Hang in there, and get well soon!!

I vote for the double-decker loaded peanut butter sandwich!!

  13. rebecca says:

BBQ chicken and ricotta pizza please. Sorry about your back.

  14. daphne says:

oo.nasty. Hope u saw a good physio and got that straighten out!

I’m voting for the double decker sandwich!

  15. Lisa says:

I’m going for the homemade refried beans, sounds potentially gluten-free! Ouch on the back, I know the feeling! My back has been out and I just went to the chiropractor today and ahhhhhh does it feel good now!

    Take it easy!
    Lisa :)

I hear ya on the tall thing, I’m 6’2 and things were just not built for me… And I feel your pain about the back too, I tore a disc playing basketball, it seems like they never heals completely…
