One of my all-time favorite drinks has to be sangria. And one of the best places to get sangria is Calle Ocho restaurant in Manhattan. On the weekend they serve brunch with unlimited sangria with your meal, offering 6 different varieties (3 red, 3 white) housed in large, self-serve glass barrels. It’s a phenomenal brunch but tends to ruin the rest of the day. Regardless, their different flavors of sangria are creative and delicious and that was all the influence I needed to create a strawberry sangria. At parties and potlucks I’m usually the designated sangria man and for a while I was afraid to deviate from the ever-popular Apple-Orange variety but Strawberry has since surpassed it in popularity. But you need to decide for yourself so I suggest you make both! For maximum flavor, make your sangria at least 8 hours ahead of time, preferably overnight.

Ingredients:Print Print

Strawberry Sangria
2 (750mL) bottles red wine*
1 – 1.5 Liters diet cranberry ginger ale, 7-up, or orange soda
1/2 lb frozen strawberries
2t cinnamon
1/4t nutmeg

Apple-Orange Sangria
2 (750mL) bottles red wine*
1 – 1.5 Liters diet orange soda
2 apples, diced
1t cinnamon

* Note: I use a double-sized bottle (1.5L) of Corbett Canyon Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s not the best wine to drink alone since there’s not much complexity but it’s smooth and has just enough flavor for sangria, it’s easily found in stores, and only costs around $8 for the 1.5L bottle.

Directions:

1. Using a large pitcher or empty 1-gallon water jug, add all of the ingredients for your sangria of choice into the container. Stir or shake well and place in the fridge for at least 8 hours or preferably overnight. Stays good in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.

Sangria is my all-time favourite drink. But I don’t water it down with gingerale/soda; I use cherry brandy instead. Hehe. And a little splash of orange juice. I love how you can just pile the fruit into sangria and let it just release all the flavours… mmmm. Thanks for these recipes!

No joke. You need to go and let me know if you ever do and how you like it!

So you don’t put any soda or juice in it other than a splash? Kudos. But I suppose if you let it sit overnight the fruit releases a lot of sweetness and flavor to compensate. I add the soda for immediate drinkability and plus it takes the alcohol levels down a notch you so can drink more of it =).
